Providence Place

The story of Providence Place goes back to 1895 when brothel owner, Madame Volino, experiencing an epiphany, transformed her house of ill repute into the San Antonio Rescue Mission. There, she cared for young women faced with the shame of having a baby out of wedlock, and helped place their babies for adoption with loving families.

In the 1970s, as the stigma decreased, and likewise, our adoptions, we saw a way to use our 25-acre campus to provide much-needed training for young adults who were deaf. Soon, this work included young adults with disabilities and, since 1974, thousands of young people have graduated with the life, work and social skills – and most of all confidence – to live independently. Methodist Mission Home, as it was known for many years, was a pioneer of open adoption in Texas and made older-child and international adoptions available, as well as, more recently embryo adoption.

Many of our adopted children have stayed in contact with Providence Place over the years and several have been active members of our board.

Today, our campus is also home to a growing group of nonprofits sharing resources and expertise, in a vibrant community offering broad opportunity and collaboration.

Abrazo is a private, nonprofit child-placement agency and is licensed by the State of Texas, and has been serving parents and children across America since 1994. But it’s so much more than “just an adoption agency.” Over the years, Abrazo has become an open adoption movement– a big nationwide family of folks who “get” that it really does take a village to raise a child. At Abrazo, our village is made up of birthfamilies, adoptive families, professionals and kids, who all care about both like true friends would. Because it’s all about the children, at Abrazo: everything we do and the way we do it is always focused on what’s truly best for the kids, all across the lifespan. The word “Abrazo” means “embrace” and we hope that truly reflects the feeling you get from us.
