Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

On July 4th, 1776 the Congress of the thirteen united States of America issued The Declaration of Independence.  It was just the beginning of what became a hard fought and, eventually won, freedom.  Certainly one of the most famous lines in this declaration is that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

Time and time again we have heard these words whenever an unjustice against persons in seen.  Using these words we saw the end to slavery in recongnition that "all men are created equal".  Our country has come so far but yet again these words must used to point out an injustice: abortion. 

Each day over 3000 tiny human are lost to abortion because they are not thought to be "created equal".  In the unfortunate "pursuit of happiness" by some they are denied one of the most basic of Rights: LIFE. 

How ironic is it that some believe that their comfort and happiness is more important that the individual person, albeit small, that only seeks to live out the words of The Declaration of Independence.  How tragic is it that misinformed and scared women are convinced that the child in their womb is only a "clump of cells".  How terrible is it that families are torn apart over the loss of that life....

But in the darkness of abortion there is a light beginning to shine.  More Americans report that they are pro life than those that report they are pro abortion.  Our youth are coming up in support of life, planned or not, and are getting educated and active in the pro life effort.  Americans overwhelmingly believe that they should not be forced to pay for abortion via federal or state monies. 

For the first time we are seeing states stand up successfully to remove funds from abortion providers and afiliates, to provide life saving ultrasounds, that show a heartbeat, before the abortion and to give women the true informed consent discussion with her abortion doctor so that she can make a truly informed choice. 

But it's not quite time to rest from our work.  Planned Parenthood and NARAL are fighting back.  All over our nation suits are being filed, injuctions are being asked for and temper tantrums are being thrown.  Like a two year old, upset that they can't have that second cookie, the abortion advocates are stamping their feet and throwing themselves on the floor yelling about how women will die in back alley coat hanger abortions.  Wake up call: abortion isn't safe TODAY!  Women die from legal abortions right now.  For those that physically survive the abortion, there are years of regret, sorrow and emotional pain. 

If we want the best for women then we want to rid our world of abortion.  Women deserve the best we can give for their health both physically and mentally.  The "pursuit of Happiness" can not only apply to the individuals that breath our air.  If we are truly a free nation where all men are "created equal" then we must include the smallest of our population. 

It's true that some women are not ready or able to be a parent.  That does not mean, however, that they should take away the opportunity for couples who are ready and able to be parents. 

In a society filled with "me, me, me" it's time we stopped thinking about ourselves and start thinking about how to make the world a better place.  What could make the world a better place more easily than an innocent, wide eyed, child!

So many couples are waiting years and years for the opportunity to be called "dad and mom".  For nine short months of uncomfort a woman can spend a lifetime, filled with happiness, knowing that she has given a child the opportunity to have "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness".
